Field Notes

How to eat the island like a local

🍷

BYOB is the law of the land

LBI issues almost no liquor licenses, so most restaurants are strictly bring-your-own. Pack a bottle or a six-pack — many spots chill and pour for you.

📅

Know the season

Peak season runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, and much of the island closes after Columbus Day. In July, book dinner tables by morning and expect lines at lunch.

🚲

One road, many ways

Long Beach Blvd runs the whole island. Drive it, ride the LBI Shuttle, or bike it — the island is flat, the lanes are wide, and the summer light is worth it.

🦀

Start at the causeway

You arrive over Route 72 at Ship Bottom. Mud City and Old Causeway sit right at the gateway — the perfect first or last meal before the bridge.
